This multi-tasking room features 13 workstations comprising full sized weighted-action electric pianos and iMac computers. Each machine has Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Sibelius, MaxMSP and Auralia ear training software and the room also has CD/DVD burners.
There are two 60″ LCD screens linked to the teaching workstation making it an ideal space for IT, music software and specialist events.
2018 – 2019 Opening Times
The keyboard lab is open for student use during proctored sessions. These sessions get scheduled at the start of each year and where possible will remain the same though out. The lab closes for a couple of weeks over the Christmas and Easter periods and is closed during the Summer months for maintenance. Please see notices on the door and via the Trinity News channel for updates. Should yo require the use of the room during a closure period please get in touch with the Music Technology Technician to discuss your requirements (avsupport.music@trinitylaban.ac.uk).

Routing for iMac Workstation #1 Audio
The routing for this has been updated to accommodate the additional rear speakers. As such the audio is now sent from:
Computer -> Audio Interface -> Speakers
So to listen back to the computer audio on headphones please plug into the Scarlett 6i6 Headphone sockets.
The outputs from the Keyboard has also been routed through the interface on inputs 3/4. So for keyboard playback via the speakers please ensure the interface, speakers and keyboard are turned on and the monitor volume is up on the interface.
You can still use the keyboard at WS 1 with headphones by using the keyboards headphone socket (this also stops audio going to the keyboards speakers).
How do I use the Media Server?
The Media Server is an area you can use to transfer files across the network (eg. from a Keyboard Lab iMac to a library PC). You may leave files on the Media Server temporarily as long as you follow the guidelines for its usage.
The Media Server is for the use of all students, but use of the Media2 Server is limited to just AMT3 students and Staff.
How to access the Media Servers from a Mac
On the desktop, double-click on the ‘Connect to Media Server’.
A login window will appear. Enter your username and password (the same one that you use to logon to the Library computers), and click on the ‘Connect’ Button.
You’ll now find that there is an icon for the Media server on you desktop.
Double click on the icon on your desktop to access the Media server.
Where to save your files in the Media server
Inside ‘Media’ you’ll find a folder named ‘Students’ which contains the following folders: AMT2, Composers, PSS1, and Other Students. Put you files in the relevant place in a folder with your name. Files put in the wrong place on the Media server may be removed.
Please Note:
Never work directly from the Media server, always copy your files to some where on your local computer first (e.g. the ‘Scratch’ folder).
Make sure you read the important ‘Read Me’ file in Media before you use it.
Once you’ve finished using the Media Server, make sure you disconnect from it by dragging the ‘Media’ icon to the trash can on the dock.
Where should I save my Work?
How do I burn a CD/DVD?
Using a ‘Burn Folder’:
The Teaching and 5 Central Lab machines have CD/DVD Burner drives attached.
To create a ‘data’ CD using a burn folder, choose File > New Burn Folder, and give the folder a name. Copy into this the items you want on a disc. The Finder places aliases to the files in the burn folder, not the files themselves. Don’t try and write files from the Media Server on to CD – copy them to the local ‘Scratch’ drive first, else the disc might not burn properly.
Do not insert a blank disc yet! To burn the items in a burn folder to a disc, double-click the burn folder, and click Burn. Insert a blank or rewritable disc into your computer when prompted and follow the onscreen instructions.
Then wait for a few minutes!
For DVD’s you can burn directly from iMovie.
Where to save your files?
243 iMac Data Retention Policy
The keyboard lab iMacs are used by multiple staff and students on a daily basis and as such any work saved on them is at your own risk. Due to the size of many of the files created (Logic, Ableton etc) it’s impractical to save them to your network storage so we recommend that all student and staff work done in 243 should be saved to the internal ‘Scratch’ drive for working on, then onto your own external USB Pen or Hard Drive at the end of the session.
All files being used/worked on should be copied to the Scratch drive.
DO NOT work on large files from your network drive or from a USB Pen/Drive. Both the network and USB busses are slower than the internal drives, so you will encounter slow performance and sync issues along with other intermittent problems.
Accessible Drives/Data Policy:
- Macintosh HD – Regularly Cleared without notice (Do not save work here)
- Scratch Drive – Cleared Annually (Summer)
- Network Storage – Backed up by IT
- Media Drives – Cleared Annually (Please keep to the file structure dictated for saving work)
Large/In Use Files:
Save work to the ‘Scratch’ Drive in a folder with your full name. Work on these drives is accessible to anyone using the machine so this is at your own risk.
Small Files:
Smaller Files (e.g. Sibelius, Word…) can also be saved to your network storage (accessed by ‘Connect to Network Drives’ on desktop). This storage is backed up by IT so is secure.
Anything not stored on the ‘Scratch’ Drive could be moved or deleted without notice as these drives are often cleared for updates.
